Video Summary
The ASPS Global Partner webinar, hosted by the International Resident Forum (IRF), highlighted ASPS’s commitment to global collaboration and resident development, while promoting membership benefits and upcoming meetings (including the first Global Plastic Surgery Congress in Buenos Aires and Plastic Surgery The Meeting 2026 in Houston).

Dr. Gene Tay (UK resident and IRF chair) discussed career strategy from medical school to residency, emphasizing that paths need not be linear. He outlined four pillars for success: clinical excellence, early academic engagement, proactive mentorship, and developing a global perspective through observerships and fellowships. He warned against waiting for the “perfect time,” unhealthy comparison, and burnout, and advised trainees to embrace challenging opportunities, be reliable and collaborative, and document progress through logbooks and reflections.

Dr. Abir Elshiraoui (Qatar) reviewed global variations in plastic surgery training, comparing integrated vs. independent pathways and how healthcare needs shape curricula. She detailed Qatar’s ACGME-I–accredited integrated program, selection priorities (professionalism, rotations within the institution, communication skills, and high-quality research), and the value of broad early rotations.

Dr. Robert Murphy (US) focused on residency-to-career transition and CV strategy, stressing impact, leadership, service, and mentorship, with attention to research expectations and presentation quality.

Dr. Sanjan Nairn explained fellowship decision-making, encouraging early subspecialty focus, mentorship, networking, and strategic observerships; fellowships improve technical and clinical expertise and can be required for privileges.

Former ASPS President Dr. Gregory Evans addressed building a professional brand ethically through skill, patient-centered outcomes, strategic planning, market analysis, and measurable marketing—while avoiding overly commercial approaches that compromise professionalism.
