Dermal fillers have experienced dramatic growth in popularity, with a 1% increase in procedures recorded between 2018 and 2019. A systematic review identified 61 patients with severe complications from soft tissue fillers which included skin necrosis and blindness. Intravascular injection can lead to blood vessel blockage and tissue ischemia. Soft tissue fillers should only be injected by licensed health care providers who have appropriate training and a thorough knowledge of the anatomy at and around the injection site. An understanding of the causes, treatment and techniques to minimize the risk of these complications can improve the safety of these procedures.
