This module equips residents with the foundational knowledge and clinical decision-making skills required to deliver safe, evidence-based laser treatments for aesthetic rejuvenation. With an emphasis on laser technology, patient selection, and complication management, the course supports the development of competent, ethical, and patient-centered laser practitioners.
Learners will explore the basic principles of laser physics, tissue interactions, and classification of laser types (ablative vs. non-ablative; fractional vs. non-fractional) to inform clinical application. The module emphasizes pre-procedure assessment, including skin type evaluation, identification of appropriate indications for laser resurfacing, and individualized treatment planning for concerns such as rhytids, photoaging, dyschromia, scars, and vascular or pigmented lesions.
Residents will compare and contrast technologies such as CO₂ lasers, Er:YAG, Nd:YAG, and pulsed-dye lasers, identifying the benefits and limitations of each based on indication, patient skin type, and downtime tolerance. A critical focus is placed on laser safety protocols, including protective eyewear, plume management, and facility standards.
The course outlines pre- and post-procedure regimens that promote optimal healing and minimize complications, including infection, hyperpigmentation, and scarring. Learners will also practice strategies for patient counseling, setting expectations, and managing both anticipated outcomes and adverse events.
By the end of the module, residents will be able to integrate laser treatments into comprehensive facial aesthetic care, using sound clinical judgment, technical knowledge, and effective communication to enhance outcomes and patient satisfaction.
