This focused course is designed to enhance surgical residents’ understanding and management of nasal deformities associated with cleft lip. Through detailed anatomical analysis, residents will learn to identify the key structural changes involved in both unilateral and bilateral cleft nasal deformities. The course covers a range of surgical and non-surgical interventions, emphasizing individualized treatment planning and the importance of timing in nasal reconstruction. Special attention is given to the impact of early interventions on nasal growth and long-term contour stability. Combining didactic instruction with case-based discussions, this course equips residents with the critical knowledge and decision-making skills necessary to address the functional and aesthetic complexities of the cleft lip nose.

Goal: The resident will demonstrate knowledge of the evaluation and management of unilateral and bilateral cleft nasal deformities and carry out appropriate assessment, treatment planning, and surgical management.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the anatomic mechanisms implicated in the creation of unilateral and bilateral cleft nasal deformities.
  2. Identify the specific anatomic changes occurring in the nose of a patient with a unilateral or bilateral cleft nasal deformity.
  3. Describe the surgical and non-surgical interventions used to correct cleft nasal deformities.
  4. Discuss the timing of cleft nasal reconstruction and the potential risks to facial growth and long-term contour stability.
