This course reviews the rare but serious malignancies associated with breast implants, including breast implant-associated (BIA) anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, B-cell lymphoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Participants will explore the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and management strategies for these implant-associated cancers, with emphasis on BIA anaplastic large-cell lymphoma as the most frequently reported subtype and BIA squamous cell carcinoma as the most aggressive.

The course highlights common presenting symptoms such as late seroma, pain, and swelling, and outlines recommended diagnostic workup, including imaging modalities and fluid aspiration with pathologic evaluation. Learners will also review current treatment approaches, including surgical excision algorithms and adjuvant therapies tailored to disease stage and subtype. This activity is designed to help surgeons recognize early warning signs, initiate appropriate evaluation, and apply evidence-based management strategies for patients with suspected breast implant-associated malignancies.

Intended Audience

This educational activity is intended for all CME-related persons including plastic surgery practitioners, residents, and other healthcare professionals.

Learning Objectives

After viewing this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Name the 3 major subtypes of breast implant–associated (BIA) malignancies.
  2. Recognize the most common presenting symptoms of BIA malignancies.
  3. Identify appropriate treatment options for each BIA malignancy, including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.
  4. Answer patient questions about recurrence and reconstruction after a diagnosis of BIA malignancy.
