This course provides surgical residents with a comprehensive understanding of the evaluation, diagnosis, and multidisciplinary management of breast cancer. Emphasis is placed on developing a patient-centered, evidence-based approach to care that integrates oncologic safety with reconstructive planning.

Residents will gain expertise in the diagnostic workup of breast masses, including the appropriate use of imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI, as well as tissue sampling techniques like fine needle aspiration, core needle biopsy, and stereotactic biopsy. The course also covers clinical staging, genetic risk assessment, and surgical decision-making for breast-conserving therapy, mastectomy, and prophylactic procedures.

In addition, residents will become familiar with the role of perioperative systemic therapies, radiation treatment, and the indications for adjuvant regimens. The course explores the plastic surgeon’s role in surgical oncology, including collaboration with oncology, radiology, and pathology teams to ensure comprehensive care.

By the end of the course, residents will be equipped to contribute meaningfully to the surgical and reconstructive care of patients with breast cancer, grounded in a strong understanding of disease biology, treatment planning, and patient communication.

Goal: The resident will achieve a detailed knowledge of the evaluation and management of the breast cancer patient.
