Pdf Summary
Rhytidectomy, or facelift surgery, remains a crucial procedure in facial rejuvenation, with a notable increase in its popularity over recent years. Despite the rise in noninvasive options, rhytidectomy provides more enduring results, often lasting 10 to 12 years. The surgery involves different techniques, primarily classified by incision type and extent of skin and SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) dissection. Techniques are categorized as traditional, short-scar, and mini lifts, each offering varying access and results based on the patient's needs.

Traditional facelifts often involve comprehensive incisions, allowing extensive dissection and SMAS treatment, which is crucial for long-lasting outcomes. SMAS techniques include plication, excision, or creating a composite flap with skin. Short-scar and mini lifts are less invasive, suited for younger patients with minimal skin laxity, focusing on the face and with limited neck treatment.

Key elements for successful surgery include understanding facial anatomy, particularly the retaining ligaments and fat compartments, to avoid nerve injuries. Fat grafting is frequently used to enhance facelift results and address midface volume loss, crucial for youthful appearance restoration. Simultaneous skin resurfacing, like erbium laser or trichloroacetic acid peels, can improve skin texture, although these should be approached cautiously to avoid complications.

Management of risks such as hematomas involves strict blood pressure control and early intervention. Despite potential sensory changes or nerve injuries post-surgery, these are often temporary, with full recovery expected. The low incidence of permanent injuries makes facelift surgery a reliable option for facial rejuvenation. Additionally, patient safety and optimized outcomes are achieved through careful planning and execution of these adjunctive procedures.
