Video Summary
Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are high-flow vascular lesions that bypass the capillary bed and can progressively enlarge. The Schaubinger stages range from warm, subtle lesions to destructive, bleeding lesions and even heart failure. Early diagnosis is important because AVMs are often mistaken for hemangiomas. Management typically begins with angiography and embolization to reduce blood flow, followed by surgical resection and careful reconstruction of facial landmarks. Residual dermal disease may require sclerotherapy with sodium tetradecyl sulfate and laser treatment, such as pulsed dye or Nd:YAG lasers, depending on lesion depth. Multiple staged procedures are often needed for best cosmetic results.
