Video Summary
The webinar opened with ASPS moderator Dr. Sarah Mess welcoming attendees and highlighting ASPS membership benefits, upcoming meetings, and the importance of submitting questions via the Q&A box. The session focused on AI in plastic surgery, with panelists discussing how rapidly AI is changing clinical care, education, research, practice management, and patient communication.

Dr. Stephen Williams gave a broad overview of AI’s evolution and relevance to plastic surgeons. He emphasized that plastic surgeons are natural innovators and described how AI is already being used for ambient note-taking, scheduling, insurance support, research synthesis, and patient search behavior. He also showed how AI search tools are beginning to replace traditional web search and demonstrated how clinics can track and improve their digital presence.

Dr. Amaka Ihegewe focused on clinical applications. She explained how AI can improve preoperative planning, predict complications, assist in imaging and simulation, support intraoperative navigation, monitor wounds postoperatively, and enhance education. She also reviewed evidence supporting machine learning for complication prediction and skin lesion detection, while noting risks such as bias, transparency issues, liability, and resource limitations.

Dr. Juan Carlos Ambrano discussed the practical impact of AI in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, especially in documentation, diagnostics, planning, marketing, and simulation tools. He cautioned against unrealistic expectations and deepfake misuse while stressing that AI is already a reality in practice.

In the Q&A, the panel addressed HIPAA concerns, patient photography consent, and the data behind simulation tools. The session concluded with a shared message: AI is here to stay, and plastic surgeons should adopt it thoughtfully while remaining mindful of ethical and clinical limits.
