A Systematic Review of Efficacy and Complications of High-Definition Liposuction

Pdf Summary
This systematic review evaluated the safety and effectiveness of high-definition liposuction (HDL), a more advanced form of liposuction designed to create a more athletic, sculpted body contour while promoting skin retraction. Because data on HDL were limited compared with traditional liposuction, the authors searched MEDLINE and Embase and included 21 English-language human studies published between 1980 and 2020. All included studies were case series.

Across the review, 6,908–6,964 patients underwent HDL. Patients were typically young, healthy adults, with an average age of about 38 years and an average BMI of about 25 kg/m². HDL was performed on the trunk, upper limbs, and lower limbs, using a variety of techniques and anesthesia methods. Postoperative care often included compression garments, foam dressings, and sometimes drains or lymphatic massage, but practices were not standardized.

The overall complication rate was 14.4%, but only 0.2% of complications were major. Major complications were rare and mainly consisted of localized or systemic infections and hematomas. The most common minor complications were transient hyperpigmentation (3.8%), seroma (3.3%), and transient soft-tissue fibrosis (2.7%). No deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism was reported.

Patient satisfaction was high, with an overall satisfaction rate of 92.6%. However, the authors noted that the evidence base is limited by inconsistent reporting, lack of standardized outcome measures, and reliance on retrospective case series. They recommend future studies use validated patient-reported outcome tools, such as BODY-Q, to better compare techniques and outcomes.

Overall, the review suggests HDL is a safe and effective body-contouring procedure with low major complication rates and high patient satisfaction.
